Read everything by Le Carre and strangely the Little Drummer Girl ranks among my favourites.

Does not fit the OPs bill though, so I am going to encourage him to try them anyway or branch out and try "A Prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving. Masterful.

The Dancer Upstairs by Nick Shakespeare is a seriously good thriller - it's set during the Maoist uprising in Peru in the 80s and has a fair bit of gore.

The film's not bad either. Viva Presidente Ezequiel!

I also recommend the Dogs of Riga by Henning Mankell. If you'e a Cold Warrior like me, you'll love both.

The Key to Rebecca by Ken Follett is also worth a shout, as is everything by Le Carré with the exception of the Little Drummer Girl. Not too much gore though.

Damen Brooke series by Steven Dunne are good. Start off with a serial killer and then carries on out from there.

The Lies of Locke Lamora is the first in the Gentleman Bastard series and is fantasy but chiefly concerned with very long cons. Damned well written.

Only trouble is that he's taking too bloody long to write them.

The Jack Reacher books by Lee Child are all pretty average.

The Enemy is the best one by an absolute mile though and a really, really good thriller.

Well written too unlike a lot of the other Reacher books which I have suspected for a while are actually ghost written.

"Have you read the entire Thorne series by MB? "

Yep, and the complete McCrae series.
McCrae's gobby boss is DI Steel, a brilliant character.

Another good thriller writer - Simon Kernick.
Anything by him, but a good start is 'Severed'
